How to Save Energy by Using Your Thermostat
"How well are you using your programmable thermostat? Think about when your family wakes up, leaves the house and goes to bed. Then, set your thermostat to change temperature at these times. Realize winter savings by programming your thermostat to drop by eight degrees when you’re away and when you’re sleeping. In the summer, increase the temperature by seven degrees when you’re away and by four degrees when you’re sleeping. And never override your thermostat or place it on hold. Turning the temperature way up or down won’t make your system heat or cool faster, but it will make it work overtime and wreak havoc on your energy bills. Ask us, the Westinghouse HVAC experts, how to optimize your settings during your next pre-season checkup. It could save you as much as $180 a year. "
Dirty Air Filters Damage Systems
A dirty air filter can substantially increase the cost of running your heater and A/C. When was the last time you changed yours? Check your air filter every month, especially during heavy use periods like winter and summer. If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the air filter every three months to keep dust and dirt from building up in the system, which could lead to expensive repairs or even early system failure.
